In fact most experts on this subject advise that it is virtually impossible to get a really good one-word domain name (in the dot com domain) and that folks should instead focus on getting a decent one. Or opt for a none dot com domain altogether.
Still, even getting that decent one can prove to be quite a challenge.
An extremely useful resource here is the whois site – http://www.whois.sc. At this site there is a free service that instantly generates 20 suggested domain names based on your suggested keyword.
There are a host of other available tools. For example you can use free software Domain Name Analyzer which will make a list of domain names and check their availability of all. This saves you loads of time as opposed to checking one-by-one. The same software will also give you useful suggestions
But probably the best source of really good domain names is in using expired domain names. Sadly this is becoming more difficult by the day as there are now companies that have software that is capable of checking for the availability of certain domain names every second and then registering them quickly. This leaves you with the most viable option being the use of back-ordering services. The way these services work is that they look for domains that you want and register them on you behalf as soon as they expire.
Probably the most important quality of a domain name is that it should be easy to remember. And then the shorter and catchier your domain name is, the better. Marketing gurus are now saying that you also require a domain name that is brandable. With a brandable name, you will save loads of money in the advertising that you would otherwise need to brand a name that is not related to your line of business.
